I LOVE "perpetual motion" - I read your newsletter in bed this morning, and this concept propelled me up! I've sort of vaguely had this thought before, but never so well put. I think it's the stopping that undoes me - my sister who has helped with many of my tedious big life tasks over the years, like moving and packing boxes, said once that if she took her eye off me, she'd find me stopped in the middle of a room, staring aimlessly. I feel like perpetual motion is the key to not letting that happen. A great reminder and name for a brilliant concept, thanks Hannah and Ellen!

Hurray for perpetual motion! What a thrill to see our always very enriching conversation out in the wider world. I’ve been thinking about it since, too, I think it’s especially important in these last weeks of winter. It’s the perfect time for a bit of a languish to creep in; we’re no longer in the cosy, delicious dark days of deep winter so it seems like it’s a bit colder than it should be or things are taking a little longer than they ought or there’s just sort of … less going on. Nothing for it but to keep moving!

MY FAVORITE WORDS, SENTENCES AND SENTIMENTS FROM THIS WEEK’S NEWSLETTER: “The idea is: you don’t think, you just do.…“Get the boring stuff out the way, then you can enjoy life”…. The brocanteurs (second-hand stall-holders)… banlieues rouges — Communist-voting suburbs…whose English name alludes to the town’s (former?) communist inclinations…Brentford F.C. to the Premier League…criticised for the quality of its builds…Coypu river rats…from pizza (made by the official sponsor of the Saint-Ouen Red Stars), to Korean street food, to burgers and even some French food…”

The Saint-Quen Red Stars and the Brentford F.C. bring to mind my favorite “anti-fascist” football club, F.C. St. Pauli https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_St._Pauli I became acquainted and a fan from a story in the NY Times about a bar under the Williamsburg Bridge in NYC that is home to The East River Pirates, one of F.C. St. Pauli’s earliest and most zealous support groups in the U.S. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/07/nyregion/fc-st-pauli-east-river-bar.html

If I’m anything at all, I’m anti-fascist and therefore anti-Trump and anti-Republican; so, I bought/buy my sons F.C. St. Pauli gear that screams anti-fascist https://fcsp-shop.us/?utm_campaign=Mystery%20Bundle%202023&utm_medium=email&utm_source=mj

I buy a lot for myself and my favorites are, “Make Fascists Afraid Again,” “FCK Ice,” and “No Place for Homophobia, Fascism, Sexism, Racism.” With all the radical right-wingers here in the States, I take my chances wearing those shirts, since I’m 70 and have a disability; But I look like I could be dangerous, and I know how to box…so far so good. My youngest son Tony is 6’4,” 230lbs and my oldest son Frankie Guy is a former college football player and lifts, so no one wants to tangle with them.

You say the Brits were criticized for the quality of their builds, I love the Brits and they make very stylish automobiles, but the quality is non-existent…want to cry every day? buy a Range Rover…my oldest son was nearly 20 and afraid to learn to drive so, against all logic, I bought a Mini Cooper (engine made in France, another culture that can’t build quality cars), since it was like a go-cart and my son passed the test and I paid dearly for constant repairs (new engine, tranny).

Oh my gawd, I was such a sucker for the 1970 Triumph GT6, back in the day and I still am: https://barnfinds.com/rare-1970-triumph-gt6-fastback-in-storage-since-1986/

BTW, I only buy Japanese autos because they are like buying an appliance; such as a refrigerator…they run and run…U.S. cars look nice but not much quality.

BTW I’m only 5’10” so I wish Tony’s dad would show up and claim him sometime!
